A running event for a good purpose: Audi Relay Race 2018

Whether it’s a Q2 or a A8 – new model start-ups are regularly churned out at Audi. During last weekend, the employees had the chance to run up as well: 1,250 Audi employees put on their running shoes for a good purpose and took part in the first Audi relay race.

Emotive atmosphere at the audi.relayrace: At the baton's handover, exhaustion met motivation on its highest level.

300 kilograms of bananas, 250 kilograms of fruit salad, 1,200 pretzels, 3,750 liters of water and 250 kilograms of pasta combined with 150 liters of tomato sauce. But for what does a car manufacturer need all of this? At Audi in Ingolstadt, the “audi.relayrace”, a big corporate event, took place on May 12 – and a lot of food was required for the total of 1,250 participating runners.

With this year’s racing event, Audi starts a new chapter of “racing”. The running event “24 hours by Audi” reins over the baton to the “audi.relayrace”.

Running for a good purpose at audi.relayrace

24 degrees Celsius, a bright and sunny day. Maik Sommer sprints across the Audi Piazza, sweat drips from his temple. He chugs down some water from one of the six bottles that he carries with during the race. His face is already deep red. Noticeably, he breaths in and out. “You have to budget your powers – especially during hot weather, but we still have some reserves”, Maik calls out. He’s running for the EG express team.

130 teams collected donations during the Audi relay race. Their “oppononents”: The time and the bikers from the Audi Biking Xperience. Starting from the Neckarsulm plant, the biking team with 27 members set out for Ingolstadt after the start signal had taken place at the main plant. After a total of eleven hours, 222 kilometers and 6,842 rounds, the race ended with the arrival of the bikers at the piazza in Ingolstadt.

“The concept is great, because both locations work together and thus all Audi employees are connecting for a good purpose”, says Laura Kiefner from the “Run 4 it” team. But not only employees from Neckarsulm and Ingolstadt are taking part: Four running teams from Brussels traveled to Ingolstadt for the sole purpose of the race. Madeline Kaiser from the Team “Just 4 Fun” adds: The track is definitely demanding. It takes you uphill and downhill – sometimes in the sun, then in the shadows. The variety is nice.”

Taking a look at the work place from a different perspective: A part of the track took the runners through the Audi production halls.

But what would a relay race be without a baton? Every team received a personalized one that the runners had to hand over to their team mates. The stick was used for tracking all of the finished rounds by the teams and thus for determining the donation amount. In the end, approximately 70,000 euros were collected that will help social institutions in the Ingolstadt and Neckarsulm area.

More than just a running event

But the “audi.relayrace” is more than a sport’s event. The Audi production plant in Ingolstadt transformed not only into a racing track, but offered a colorful fringe event for the whole family including activities like a climbing wall, a bouncy castle and a car coloring action. On the stage, employee bands, regional celebrities and dancing groups had the chance to perform. Several food trucks catered for the visitor’s physical well-being.

audi.relayrace: One team, one goal

In the running event’s foreground: The Audi team spirit. Every runner was cheered on loudly – regardless from which team or location, just like the motto “one team – one goal”. It was only about one thing: Running as many rounds as possible for a good purpose.

With a total of 76 rounds, the “Bodyshop Runners” contributed a lion’s share to the donation sum, while also winning the golden batons for the most laps done. The Ingolstadt team “V-Maxx” made second place with 75 rounds, the third place went to the colleagues from Brussels that ran 74 rounds with the “Audi Brussels 1” team. The team name “V-Maxx” was well showcased by Hagen Brosius: He ran the fastest round in 7 minutes and 5 seconds. For their appearance in superman clothing with red capes and masks, the team “S flys” was awared with a prize for creativity.

A shared running experience

At the audi.relayrace, runners from four different company locations took part: Ingolstadt, Neckarsulm, Győr and Brussels. At the same time as the running teams in Ingolstadt, 27 bikers from the Audi Biking Xperience in Neckarsulm started their journey to the Bavarian Audi plant. They overcame a track of 217 kilometers and 1,480 meters of altitude. With the bikers’ finish line at the Piazza at the Audi Forum in Ingolstadt, the relay race came to an end. In the evening, the event’s patrons announced the winner team, the total sum of accomplished rounds and the resulting donation amount of 70,000 euros. With this proceeds, Audi supports social institutions in the Ingolstadt and Neckarsulm area.
