Topless in the Audi super sports car through the fall

He is faster, lighter and more dynamic than his predecessor: the new Audi R8 Spyder. Car blogger Florian Roser tested the second-generation R8 – at the forefront of Audi’s high-end sports cars. What impressed him most while driving open-topped on the Costa Brava? It wasn’t the legendary sound alone.

As a coupé, the Audi R8 V10 is the perfect toy. It really impressed me – and this feeling lingered on. Brilliant handling, brutal acceleration and this legendary sound which attracts appreciative looks every minute – all elements which make this sports car from Ingolstadt so special.
The coupé series is now enhanced by the Spyder: an open-roof Audi R8, but with the customary features. Already on the way to the Costa Brava, where I was able to drive the Spyder for the first time, I asked myself: Would driving the R8 open-topped still be a more pleasant experience for my ears?
First of all, I can say that this is possible in two respects, as Audi has found a solution in the Audi R8 Spyder for enjoying excellent sound quality with an open-fabric roof.

Music for the ears

Bang & Olufsen loudspeakers have been integrated into the headrests of the sports seats, ensuring a rich sound experience, even when driving at high speed.
The real way to experiencing an “eargasm” though is to press on the little button in the center console, which – whether the cover is closed or open – makes the small glass plane behind the passengers’ heads disappear.  When this happens, the orchestra at the rear of the Audi R8 reaches yours ears directly, without any hindrances.

Topless feels best

You fly all the way to Barcelona to drive the Spyder – and it’s raining when you get there. This gave me the chance to test the qualities of the closed R8 Spyder, even if I was left feeling slightly dissatisfied.

Luckily, this changed the next morning. As if there had never been a trace of bad weather, golden sunlight shone across the sea and fell gently on my forehead, as I spun the V10 around the bends of the coastal road. This is exactly the way it’s supposed to feel to drive a cabrio: you miss absolutely nothing in terms of dynamic motion, you can enjoy the world-class sound of the engine even more and you have this magnificent feeling of the wind blowing in your face and the sun warming it. A broad smile is guaranteed!

Audi R8 Spyder V10: the darling of the masses

In every respect, the R8 Spyder’s performance is remarkable. But what really remained in my mind was the impression it made on all the people I encountered in Spain – irrespective of whether this was in the big city jungle of Barcelona or on winding mountain roads around the monastery of Montserrat.

There was one thing that Florian Roser did not like about the Audi R8 Spyder: getting out.

Wherever I went with Audi R8 Sypder, I was greeted with great joy. I was filmed from cars driving past and from the side of the road. Small boys ran waving alongside and oncoming vehicles showed their enthusiasm by briefly flashing their headlights.
And the best thing of all? All those people, who became fans of the R8 Spyder within a fraction of a second, have still to experience so many aspects of the vehicle. The magnificently designed interior, for instance, where – from the quilted leather to the smallest switch – everything matches perfectly.

In the end, there just was one thing I didn’t like about the R8 Spyder: getting out of it.
