With a constant and powerful thrust of 500 Nm torque, it pulls and at the same time pushes the sturdy limousine towards the ridge, where the sun proclaims itself for this new day in the Portuguese Douro Valley with its first emitted photon particles. The new Audi A6 55 TFSI almost sucks itself into the narrow curves of the miniature road boundary. It’s a little after six in the morning. But it will prove worth getting up that early for the spectacle ahead. The first indirect lighting elements illuminate parts of the two-level dashboard. The electronics of the A6 quickly switch to day mode and gently guide the ambient lighting to the end of the day.
Test drive with the new Audi A6 55 TFSI Sedan
He whizzed through the bends of the Douro Valley in Portugal with the new Audi A6 Sedan: Blogger Benjamin Brodbeck put the new A6 to an extensive test and only found something to complain about the transmission. He reveals what convinced him the most in the end and why he felt like he was in an Audi A8.
Generous and light-flooded interior
The previously luminous quattro logo – together with the five illuminated belt buckles – also gives up its night-time activity and inevitably blends in with this natural development. The brightly illuminated edges of the interior absorb the warm sunlight and give the cockpit in mother-of-pearl beige and agate grey a generous and open appearance. The two screens of the multimedia system are perfectly integrated into the large command center and slightly inclined towards me – after all, the new Audi A6 represents a driver-oriented philosophy.
What reminded me of the Audi A8
And I can feel it as well: Not only do the high-quality full leather seats provide a sporty sitting position, but also an excellent lateral support and comfort – partly owing to the massage function. Among other things, it makes me feel like I’m in an A8. In the comfort mode I just selected, the suspension lets me float over the asphalt as if the road surface were finished with cotton wool. The A6 glides almost silently along the shore road – not a trace of ambient or rolling noises. But as I leave the valley, the wider roads say goodbye – and the mountain calls.
Side support for a long-haul sedan? Hard to believe, but the new A6 carries RS-typical DNA – provided the driver gives the order. And that’s what I plan to do – unaware of what is ahead of me. After all, the schedule for our sunrise shooting is tight and my plan to experience it from the beginning won’t be stopped by anything. In this moment, the body painted in typhoon grey not only harmonizes in color with the road surface and the barren surroundings, but also unites impressively with the road leading up to the mountain ridge. The slightly increased width of the body compared to its predecessor protrudes slightly beyond the miniature road, but the lightness with that the sedan moves drastically minimizes the perceived width.
New Audi A6 sedan with quattro and all-wheel steering
I select the dynamic mode using the driving dynamics switch. The sportiest driving program gives the air suspension the command to lower itself. This makes it firmer, but still absorbs unevenness comfortably – without ignoring the necessary feedback from the road. In addition to the steering system that now features significantly more resistance, the entire driveline also behaves more spontaneously.
As sportiness and driver orientation are – in my humble opinion – only consistent with manual gear selection, I shift with the rocker switch behind the steering wheel. It’s impressive how the A6 likes to shift gears and manages the balancing act between comfortable suspension tuning and sporty feedback. Not that it screams for revs – that would be presumptuous – but it provides the increased heart rate with a pleasantly full, not too intrusive sound experience. In general: It doesn’t demand, but handles my sporty input commands with casualness; and transforms them with the greatest care and forbearance into a performance-oriented driving experience.
Another series is electrified with the Audi A6
The acceleration on the short, straight sections of the winding mountain road is powerful and stronger than what would be expected from a 250 kW (340 hp) V6 engine. The main reason for this experience is an electric machine that is directly flanged to the crankshaft and supports the acceleration process with E-Power. All available engines in the A6 are equipped with a mild hybrid system. To perfect the curve delight, the all-wheel steering supports the stability and precision of the rear section. It turns the rear wheels up to five degrees in these narrow hairpin bends and thus provides an unusual driving experience. Not only does this automatically reduce the steering angle – the complete driving characteristics become even more precise. The rear axle feels the tail already shortly before the curve in order to drive through it with higher speed. A sports differential on the rear axle distributes the power even more precisely to the two rear wheels. Full performance orientation. Almost like an RS model – only without the race track feeling.
And so, with the new Audi A6 you cannot only travel extremely comfortably, but also whiz through the bends – if you feel like it. And yes, I actually felt like it. Some RS performance also comes through along the way. After about twenty minutes I reach an altitude of about 900 meters. The sun’s rays are now touching the opposite mountain ridges – just the right time to attach the right lens onto my camera and set the scene for the A6. This doesn’t prove to be a hard job. Not only does the body look timeless and elegant from almost every angle, but the surrounding landscape resembles that of another planet. Oversized and well-formed stones, charred branches and lush greenery create an interesting color experience.
Elegant side-line in symbiosis with 21 inch rims
The deep metallic grey of the outer skin reflects the warm colors and, together with the 21-inch rims, ensures an elegant and modern presence. The respective overhangs of the A6 are also reduced by the large rims. This reduces the optical center of balance, making the limousine seem to stand more comfortable on the road. While maneuvering on the narrow roads, the all-wheel steering plays into my hands again: In this situation, it reduces the turning circle by around 1.1 metres. Perfect to position the car as quickly and as easily as possible – and at the same time, to enjoy this unique sunrise. There’s no question about it: Getting up early for that will always be worth it.
