The scent of popcorn is in the air, mixed with tense anticipation. It’s 8:45 in the morning, Andrei Goaga and his competitors stand at the Audi booth in Geneva. A jury of experts from the film and automotive industry have chosen the three finalists Andrei Goaga, Bob Heinemann and Stjepan Marina out of more than 120 submitted concepts and six produced short films. Now it’s up to the votes of Audi Facebook fans to decide who wins the race and will be crowned as the big winner during the press conference.
The winner of the #RevealTheA6 Film Contest
It was indeed a top-notch film contest for the unveiling film of the new Audi A6 sedan. In the end, the pivotal public vote on Facebook made all the difference, naming the Romanian director Andrei Goaga as winner with his homage to comfort. Audi Blog author Susanne Mellinghoff accompanied the young filmmaker at the Geneva International Motor Show, where his film staged the luxury sedan’s premiere.
The exhibition stand gets fuller by the minute and the seats start filling with anticipated guests. A heavy red curtain hides the view to the screen, cozy red cinema chairs convey a real cinematic atmosphere. Hostesses are distributing ice confection and chocolate. The stand is bathed in soft reddish light. Andrei and the other filmmakers take their seats.
Andrei Goaga wins the #RevealTheA6 Film Contest
9 am. After Audi CEO Rupert Stadler’s short welcome, the heavy curtains opened for the three films “Mr. Comfort”, “Comfort is more than a mix” and “Everything’s changing”. The hall is filled with spontaneous applause from the audience again and again. And finally, the long-awaited moment arrives: “And the winner is… Andrei Goaga!”
Andrei dedicated his short film to the A6 core competence “comfort”. How did he come up with the idea that “comfort is more than a mix”? “I believe that the totality is larger than the sum of parts,” Andrei says “and this also goes for the components that define the car’s comfort”.
One of his biggest challenges was not to show the car itself. At the same time, this was also the biggest inspiration. “I had to think of every detail and find a way to show it differently. To prepare myself, I looked at a lot of footage about the new Audi A7 and the comfort features of the car. How would these components look like if they weren’t in a car? This sparked the idea.”
In the last few weeks Andrei worked on his film day and night. For three weeks, him and his film crew looked for the perfect location and prepared the film set. After a day of preparation and a day of filming, about ten days remained for postproduction.
The A6 winner film – the shooting in detail
Andrei and his team shot the film in an old factory in Bucharest, where hydraulic pumps used to be produced. In total, 30 people were involved in Andrei’s Film. A particularly challenging task: the set design and the props. “In the beginning, you think: it will be easy to produce. But it was really hard to select and to obtain the perfect objects.” After all, the 13 objects didn’t constitute the background of the set, they were the main characters of the film. “We didn’t have actors like in a normal movie, which we would have selected through a casting. Instead, we casted objects. And we had a very specific idea of what they should look like. Elegant, but not too modern at the same time, because that would have destroyed the film’s poetic aspect.”
The perfect voice to introduce the new Audi A6
The Romanian filmmaker had the music composed exclusively for the film. “The scoring is extremely important. I was finally satisfied in the third version,” he says with a laugh. Equally crucial was the speaker’s voice. “I looked for the perfect Audi voice for a long time and finally found it in a freelancer database. Since the speaker lives in the US, we weren’t able to meet in person. We communicated over the Internet. After roughly seven revisions, we finally had the perfect voice.”
11 AM, the cinema hall’s rows start filling up for the first film presentation after the press conference. Andrei and the other filmmakers also want to watch the films again in a relaxed atmosphere. “The cinematic atmosphere that Audi has created is amazing,” says Andrei.
The filmmakers’ background
Even as a teenager, Andrei saw himself as a visual artist and acquired graphic design and video animation knowledge. “It has always been my passion to visualize things.” So, it was only natural for him to attend the film school in Bucharest, Romania, and study cinematography there. He graduated with a master’s degree in 2012 and began working as a freelance director.
3 PM. The films are shown on the big screen for the third time now. After the press conference, there’s a screening of all the competition films every two hours. Once again, the movie hall is filled to the last seat and the viewers sit back and relax with their popcorn and ice confectionary.
